Totally bizarre I was 27 at the time of buying my 2009 as well (while working Apple retail at the time) I also put in the ssd replacing the super drive, mine is now experiencing the once a month random freeze up, and I will truly be sad when it dies. I have a matching 27" display I got on Craigslist a few years ago. Read more

I bet if you wanted to go through the hassle, you could get at least a hundred for it on eBay instead of recycling it! Read more

My iMac died earlier this year. It would cost to much to fix it and I can’t get credit for a trade in due to how old it is. But still, it ran for 8 years without any issues, survived moves and was a good machine. Someday I’ll get another one. Read more

What a nice slice-of-life and send off post about your Ol’ Faithful. My friend still has her 2009 though she has not put the hours and miles on it like you have done. I started with an Apple II for pre reqs going into nursing school so many decades ago (1980-81) which makes me a sort of cult member, I guess?! I have Read more

I’ve owned many Macs going to back 1993 (60mhz of powa!) and my all time fave was the 12" G4 1ghz Powerbook. I played live gigs with it, finished my album on it and loved it like only I could. Read more

Typing this message on my Late 2009 iMac, love this computer it has been great except for the super drive dying NBD. Switched it also for an SSD, boots in under 10 sec, still runs all my needed software and Eve-Online at high setting. Great computer one of the best purchases I have ever made. Read more

I am still using my early 2009 iMac and love it very much. I haven’t done much in terms of upgrades, apart from memory, but I’ve been wondering if some upgrades might extend the life a little. It still runs well, apart from some random crashes that occur and a general slow down. The article mentions upgrading to SSD Read more

I also had one of these iMacs (i7, upgraded to 16GB of RAM. I even did the SSD upgrade on mine with an aftermarket part to make sure the fans wouldn’t blast all the time), it was my favorite computer of all time. Like you, at the time it was the single biggest purchase I ever made (rent notwithstanding, I supposed), Read more

Oh man, this JUST happened to me too with the same iMac. This computer is pretty great. And it was also basically my biggest purchase around that time. Poor grad student “swimming” in cash from an internship. The video card is what crapped out finally. Learned that after taking it to a shop. Guy there diagnosed it Read more

My honest condolences. Been there and it’s rough but you were able to move everything in time so that was really lucky. May your new MacBook treat you as well if not better. Read more

FWIW I would just wipe it then sell on Craigslist for parts. Broken iMacs can still pull in ~$100+ around here. I buy broken computers, fix, and resell, but only touch macs when it’s a friend in need. The values hold up too well, and there’s not as large of a margin in it. Read more

1) 10.6.8 is my favorite OSX version of all time. That OS is solid as a rock.
2) My 2011 imac is still running like a dream. I upgraded the ram and self installed a 512gb ssd. Getting that screen off and disconnecting everything was tedious but not difficult. Read more

I have two lovely old MacBooks. A 2008 black polycarbonate MacBook that’s my “dev” MacBook for Android modding (running only Windows 10 and Windows 7). Then I have a late 2007polycarbonate MacBook running OS X 10.8 and Linux Mint. The black one has a 64bit efi and slightly better specs, so it technically “replaced”

I have a late 2009 iMac 27" too. It had an issue in late 2013, the HD died after making strange noises for a couple of days. I then decided to use the opportunity to modernise it as much as possible, replacing the HD by an SSD where i have the OS and the programmes, i put a new HD in the DVD’s enclosure, and the DVD Read more

It’s amazing how long hardware lasts these days. It just dawned on me the other day that my computer is 4 years old, and yet it I still consider it new.

At least you didn’t have to shoot it. I’ve had to put many a Mac down. The look on their displays, as I did... I can’t wipe it from my memory. The Genius offered to do it for me, but I knew ... that I ... I had to do it myself ... it was awful. Read more
