My ex wife worked at one of the VW dealers around 1990, which is the time when these were getting broken in. As she noted and I began to notice on days when I dropped her off in the mornings, vanagons or rather their burned out hulks arrived by tow truck appx twice a week. Engine fires rampant. Thats anecdotal of Read more

Thanks for the throwback! I owned a 97 GTI VR6 (Jazz Blue) and my wife bought a 98 or 99 Jetta GLX VR6 in the dark purple that changed color subtly depending on the light. The interiors of both were identical to the pics in this story. They were pretty good cars, but the best part was obviously the motor, which Read more

This is my ‘83 westy ...I am NOT a millennial, have owned 7 VW buses since my early 20s and used to think they were ugly ...NEVER actually wanted one, until I tried one out. There is nothing that quite compares to the feeling of driving one of these and it never gets boring ... I LOVE IT ! ..Adventures await

This has been on my list of “dream cars” since I hit high school (which... may or may not have corresponded with the release of the Fast and the Furious. Whatever. No shame.) Really I’d probably take anything with a VR6, but something about this shape is just so right to me. The short hood, the truncated rear, the Read more

Anything VR6 is usually so abused here in Quebec, the tuners go nuts for them. Good on him for keeping it in that shape. I’m sure that a fair share of tuner dudes from les régions have offered him a pretty penny for it.  Read more

I always had the same exact thinking, and until today I do, I m just doing some updates to my backlight into some LED today, I thought that by 2019 I would be kind of by my self doing this I guess not that’s nice! Read more

Hi! I’m gonna be “that guy” and point out Mk3 Jetta went through 1999 in the USDM. Mk4 started at the same time, 1999 Mk4s are known in the circles as 1999.5. Read more

Funny to thing that this thing was competing in a class that included the Toyota Corolla. There really was no U.S. market competition in this segment.  Read more

These might be my favorite gauges of all time. I had the same ones in my MkIII GTI (2.slow). At night, they light up green like a McLaren F1.

Having driven a 5MT 98 GLX frequently in college (my then-girlfriend, now-wife had one) I have to contest the clutch feedback you have. Could just be a old clutch or old fluid or a bad slave, but I recall the clutch on my wife’s car as being amazingly easy to modulate and it provided great feedback. I still rank it as Read more

Back in the 1990s, if you wanted four doors, performance and a bit of refinement, you had to dish out large sums of money for a BMW or an Audi.

As someone who test drove a lot of those and passat vr6s back in the day the reason I never pulled the trigger was the clutch. Every single time the clutch was garbage on all of them. VW guys (and gals) gloss over or defend it but they were terrible. Read more

Seems somewhat relevant, so here’s my old 2pointSlow mk3 Jetta, which my dad fully restored as a passion project after I moved to the mainland US. Not fast, but it’s fun to drive at the limit and likely the only reliable water cooled VW ever made.

This article made me feel things - my first car was a 1997 Jetta GLS (2.0 liter) and this example is so lovely. Read more

When I moved to the city and needed a city car instead of a lifted Toyota 4x4 I looked around at all of the dealership offerings. This was 2003 and I had been reading SCC and playing GT, GT2 , and GT3 non stop for 10 years..

When I met my wife she was driving one of these. Same year (1998) but black. She let me drive it on our first date. Read more
